Granddad’s walking stick from Sinasos

Sotiris Marsellos, a retired theologian, keeps his grandfather’s walking stick in the living room of his refugee house. Theologos Chatzitheodoridis, Sotiris’ grandfather, was a textile merchant in Constantinople, but was originally from Sinasos. He was probably killed by robbers at the end of 1920. His mother, Nymfodora Chatzitheodoridou, his wife, Angeliki Sechnedopoulou, and their three children, Aikaterini, Kyriakos and Giorgos, were designated exchangeable refugees and left Sinasos on October 2, 1924, according to the terms of the Lausanne Treaty. All they took with them was seven bundles in which they tried to fit their most useful and valuable possessions. Theologos Chatzitheodoridis’ walking stick was not in any way useful to his family. It was, however, valuable, as it used to belong to a person most dear to them who was no longer alive. The walking stick and a photograph of Theologos are the only mementos his grandchildren and great-grandchildren have of their granddad.
